AZTEC RELIGION ARTISTIC EXPRESSION
Aztec art was originally a form of religious expression. This was their way of paying tribute to their gods. Aztec art was also a means of communication.
Pottery was not only very useful for the Aztecs for obvious reasons, but it was also a very important religious craft. Different shapes and sizes of pottery portrayed a variety of different designs for were meaningful and important to both the Aztec culture and religion itself. Each design paid some such of tribute and respect to specific Aztec gods or they just simply represented a specific Aztec tribe.
Aztecs also portrayed their true devotion to their religion through sculptures. These sculptures were made of stones. Aztecs are known to have spend day after day to finish carving these intricate sculptures. Some of these finished sculptures were then placed inside of these Aztec temples. The stone sculptures were essentially created to represent their gods or the victims of their sacrifice rituals. Aztecs have also been known to carve small figures of animals and people made of stones such as Jade, Obsidian, and Quartz. The most famous Aztec sculpture might have to be the calendar stone. The calendar stone weighs at about 22 tons and is 12 feet in diameter. The middle of this sculpture depicts the sun god.
