AZTEC RELIGION
Ancient Aztec religion essentially had a very intricate, complicated interaction of gods, dates, directions and colors. It seems that the main focus/ central point of the religion had to do with the fear of the nature, and a fear of the end of the world.
Aztecs had no specific sacred scriptures or texts, but what was considered very sacred to them were these specific codices. These specific codices were not written in any sort of hieroglyphic or text but they were designed in art form. To the left, is an example of what would be considered a "sacred text" to the Aztecs.
The left image is called the Aztec Codex Borbonicus. This was made shortly after the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. Aztecs were known for creating calendars. These calendars would predict what would happen in the future. This specific Codex was a calendar. If Aztecs had to record information, they would record in means of a calendar. The most well known Codexes are listed as: Codex Borbonicus Boturini Codex Codex Mendoza Florentine Codex Codex Tlatelolco Codex Osuna Codex Aubin Codex Magliabechiano Codex Cozcatzin Codex Ixtlilxochitl Information derived from: http://tlacatecco.com/sacred-texts/codices/ http://sacred-texts.com/nam/aztec/index.htm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHzsqlP8H3Q |
