Aztec indigenous Practices and Beliefs
Aztecs believed in many Gods. Blood was powerful and they used it for their sacrificed. Aztec would do blood offerings to avoid disasters. They used human sacrifices as an offering to the Gods.
The blood they offered the Gods was to keep the world going. Blood to them was necessary to keep the sun rising in the morning and to be able to continue living. During the sacrifice the heart is burned. This was believed to let the sacrificed person soul to the Gods and will be out of pain. Earth to them was seen as a place for Birth, Death, and Sacrificed. It is said that hundreds, and thousands of victims were sacrificed each year at the great Aztec religious sites. In Mesoamerican culture, human sacrifices were viewed as some sort of repayment for the sacrifices the gods had themselves made in creating the world and the sun. Gods, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatilipoca ripped creatures into pieces to create the earth and the sky. They are also been said to have created mountains, rivers, and springs which all had derived from various body parts. |
