Islam Art/ Artistic Expression
Islamic art contains art of Islamic societies culture and religion. Art is expressed in different forms, for example, in calligraphy, glass, ceramics, textiles, and paintings. These are not the only art form but the main forms. Most of Islamic art is seen in the architecture. For Muslims paintings are not considered noble forms of art. People do not appear in religious art. That is why there is no picture or portrait of Muhammad. Calligraphy and decoration of manuscripts are major art form. The Qu’ran and mosque are covered with calligraphy. Art is suppose to portray a meaning and essence of things and not just a physical form. Islamic art focuses on the spiritual representation of things or objects. they believe that “Muhammad said ‘Allah is beautiful and he likes beauty’” (BBC). which is why they believe beauty is a divine quality. they show it by the different forms of art, through the geometry of art, and the effort they put to their work.
